electromagnet is just that, an electric magnet.
Mounting the magnet on the door frame and the strike on the door, then applying power to the magnet, creates a strong magnetic field which holds the door shut. When power is removed, the magnet will "let go" of the strike, allowing the door to open. Since losing power will allow
