An
electromagnet is just that, an electric magnet.
Mounting the magnet on the
door frame and the strike on the door,
then applying power
to the magnet, creates a strong magnetic field
which holds the door shut.
When power is removed, the
magnet will "let go" of the strike,
allowing the door to open.
Since losing power will allow
the door to release,
